State of New Jersey Amicae History
As early as 1940, graduate chapters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority begun to realize the importance of the prestige, good will and cooperation of women who were not eligible to be members of any Greek-letter organization.
In 1948 at the National Convention (Boule’) Zeta Amicae was established as an auxiliary of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. The name Amicae means Friends in Latin. The first charter was given in 1949 to Lambda Zeta Chapter of Houston, Texas. Amicae are women who support the ideals of the Sorority but have not earned a bachelor's degree. The auxiliaries are sponsored by graduate chapters in local community services areas. These auxiliaries render invaluable services to the sorority and their communities.
The State's first Amicae Auxiliary, Zeta Amicae of Camden was founded in 1956. After several years of inactivity, it was reactivated in 2012.
Currently there are ten Amicae Auxiliaries in the state: Zeta Amicae of Princeton-Trenton which was also chartered in 1956, and reorganized in 1969; Zeta Amicae of Newark/Orange chartered in 1973; Zeta Amicae of Plainfield in 1975; Zeta Amicae of Moorestown in 1985; Zeta Amicae of Gloucester County in 1995; Zeta Amicae of Atlantic City in 1999; Zeta Amicae of Jersey City in 2012; Zeta Amicae of Middle and Southern Middlesex County in 2014; and Zeta Amicae of Monmouth and Ocean Counties chartered in 2021.
